Unmasking Irish Whiskey

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day on 17 March 2020, we honoured the Patron Saint of Ireland in partnership with the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, Bushmills.

Irish whiskey reigned supreme over its Scottish rival during the first part of the 19th century, and the Bushmills distillery has continued its tradition of crafting superior whiskey since 1608 using 100% malted barley. The process of making Irish whiskey is very similar to its Scottish neighbour, bar distilling three times as opposed to twice.

Throughout the month, guests could compare Bushmills single malts against similar famous Scottish expressions with three delectable blind tastings. The blind tasting challenge guests to taste the difference between a great Bushmills expression and an equivalent Scottish Single Malt of the same age and method of maturation. The tastings were available in 25ml measures and included:


~ Superior – Bushmills 10-year-old vs. Glenmorangie 10-year-old. Matured for at least 10 years in sherry-aged and bourbon-seasoned barrels. £12


~ Premium – Bushmills 16-year-old vs. the Balvenie 17-year-old. A combination of Oloroso sherry and bourbon seasoned-casks, then matured for several months in port wine barrels. £30


~ Prestige – Bushmills 21-year-old vs. the Balvenie 21-year-old. Aged for a minimum of 19 years in former Oloroso sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks, then transferred into Madeira casks for a further two years. £40
