Villa Soleil launched as a writers' retreat
The site of Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc was always a place of beauty and inspiration. It captured the attention of Auguste de Villemessant, the talented founder of Le Figaro, who realised its potential and built the elegant Villa Soleil; a writers' retreat nestled in the heart of paradise.
Antoine Sella rediscovers a forgotten jewel
For years and years the Villa Soleil remained obscure, abandoned and forgotten until one day a visionary young hotelier from Piedmont fell under its spell. It took Antoine Sella two years to restore the jewel he found and in January 1889 Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc opened its doors for the first time.
Dynamite and a brave new dawn
For many years Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc remained a winter destination only. Fashion at the time considered the Mediterranean Coast unhealthy and ill-suited during the summer. Battling scepticism, Antoine Sella prepared for the summer season and used dynamite to carve the now iconic seawater swimming pool out of natural basalt rock.
Creation of the yacht club
The swimming-pool and the Eden-Roc Pavilion were enlarged. The Yacht Club was born and the tearoom became the restaurant. Writers and artists including F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway used to come and stay for long sojourns. Fitzgerald immortalised the hotel as “Hôtel des Etrangers” in Tender Is the Night. In the 60s the shady beachside cabanas were opened and Marc Chagall enjoyed sketching there.
Bombardment of the Eden-Roc Pavilion
In 1944, the U.S. Navy bombarded the Eden-Roc pavilion. Three bombs demolished Eden-Roc. Their aim was to reach the Germans positioned in the port of La Garoupe and in the mosque, intending to destroy the cannons pointed on them, but the Americans ignored the fact that they were entirely made of wood. They rebuilt all the building at their own expense. During the challenging wartime period (1940-1945) the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc served as a key military hospital. Shortly after the war ended, General Eisenhower paid a special visit as a gesture of recognition and appreciation. Allied troops stayed here for almost three years and upon departure restored the hotel to its former glory
The harmony of a handpicked team
André Sella was particular about the artisans he employed. They had to share his passion for immaculate hospitality, and pursue it with the same uncompromising attention to detail, and when he was awarded the Merit Distinction he recognised his team's efforts by sharing it with them in this commemorative photograph.
The beginning of a love-story
Maja Oetker and Rudolph were sailing on a boat right in front of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. It was in 1964. They discerned a mansion far away and fell under her spell, but it was too expensive for them at that time. Five years later, without even visiting the property, Mr. and Mrs. Oetker bought the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. André Sella wanted to sell the property to someone who would preserve the family tradition and the spirit of the hotel. Mr. Oetker promised to Mr. Sella not to let the staff go before their retirement.
A new era begins
In 1964 Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc cast its spell over Maja and Rudolph Oetker, as it had over so many others. But the Oetkers responded somewhat differently, they bought the iconic property. Finalising the deal took five long years, but it was the dawn of a new era for the hotel.
A new bar
The Eden Roc Pavilion’s bar was renovated by Italian designer, Roberto Menghi. He wanted to give the feeling of being on a boat that is quite the spirit of the Eden-Roc Pavilion today. At that time a gourmet buffet was set up for the first time at the Eden-Roc restaurant.
Seven years of lavish care on the legend
In 2007 Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc launched a remarkable seven-year restoration. Continuing until 2013 the project upgraded key property features whilst protecting the rich heritage. Overseen by Mrs. Oetker and architect Luc Svetchine, the multi-million euro restoration created breathtaking new experiences, such as the revitalised Eden-Roc Grill.
AmfAR, chocolates and stars
May: The American Foundation for AIDS Research is one of the world's leading organisations dedicated to the support of HIV/AIDS research. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc has proudly hosted this prestigious event annually since 2009. June: The first of its kind in France, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc's famed chocolaterie continues to delight guests with exquisite creations. Lilian Bonnefoi and his talented team of confectioners have mastered 18 different kinds of chocolate delicacies. They also make all the chocolate required for candies, desserts, meals, in-room service and gifts. October: Before the celebrations begin, there is always time to savour the winning of a cherished and coveted goal. When Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc was officially named one of the world's finest five-star hotels, it was a moment for well-deserved pride and reflection upon more than a century of impeccable service.

Situated in a secluded enclave away from the main buildings, Villa Eleana combines the ultimate in exclusive privacy with the impeccable hospitality of an iconic five-star hotel.
The height of luxury
Representing the end of its seven-year restoration project, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc restored all the rooms at the Eden-Roc Pavilion. A new and unique area was also revealed, the Eden-Roc Champagne Lounge, located at the top of the Eden-Roc Pavilion.
Eden-Roc 100 year anniversary
During the 2014 season, the Eden-Roc Pavilion celebrated its 100th anniversary. On this occasion many celebrations took our guests on a journey through history to relive some wonderful memories.
On 22 July 2016, the mythical Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc was awarded the prestigious 'Palace distinction'. A source of pride for this 5 star hotel, a jewel of the Oetker Collection, recognised for its exceptional characteristics and qualities. Philippe Perd, Managing Director, expresses his great pride at receiving this award and praises the loyalty and effort of his teams, “men and women of real experience, entirely dedicated to our guests, who through their constant attentiveness make their stay unforgettable”.
